As you’ve seen on TV or experienced yourself, here in the midwest we are experiencing some major winter weather. While it’s nothing compared to what the northern states get on a regular basis, but here in the south we are often unprepared for such cold, wet weather.

So today we are listing a few winter exercise tips to help you stay safe and warm as we push through these cold winter days.
- Layers – Even though it’s cold outside you can still dress too warmly. The best way to stay warm is to make use of synthetic material that draws moisture away from your body as you sweat. Wearing heavy fabric will soak up all the moisture and stick to your skin and as it cools the wet fabric can chill you. Look for temperature suggestions on the winter clothing.
- Fingers & Toes – If your extremities are warm you will feel more comfortable. Gloves designed for outdoor activities can be expensive, so try a thin pair of gloves under a pair of heavier gloves. As for your toes, that’s a bit more difficult. Depending on how your shoes fit you may not be able to wear a thick sock, so you’ll have to test various ways to keep your feet warm but also comfortable.
- Head – A large percentage of your body heat is lost through the top of your head, so keep it covered to stay warm. If you sweat a lot it will also help wick away the wetness.
- Weather – Just as there are optimum times to exercise outside during the summer, winter activities are best planned during times with less wind chill. Be sure and check how much wind is blowing outside before venturing out. Even the most warmly dressed person will have difficulties staying warm in high winds.
