Lower back pain is a common cause of missed work. While many occurrences of lower back pain go away within a few days to a week, others take much longer to feel better. Sometimes, lower back pain can lead to more serious conditions that may warrant spine surgery for permanent relief.
Lower back pain affects both men and women equally, and often occurs in the so-called middle-aged years. While aging certain contributes to the potential for having lower back pain, the condition is often aggravated by an increased sedentary lifestyle. That’s why office workers using incorrect posture while on the job may more frequently suffer from lower back pain, which contributes to job-related disabilities.
But having in inactive lifestyle is only one of the reasons people suffer from lower back pain. Often, acute back pain occurs from the result of a trauma to the lower back, which may due to a sports activity or injury, work around the house, or improper lifting or moving of items. Sport injuries can occur from simple recreational play or an afternoon of football with the kids while painting a room or moving furniture can also harm the lower back area.
While the pain from these injuries can be intense, even resulting in spasms, rest and either ice or heat applications, can result in improvement in a short period.
Chronic back pain, however, is a different story. Pain is often progressive and doesn’t go away. Spinal degeneration or disc disease and resulting pain often intensifies with age. While the injury to the spine may have started as acute back pain, when the condition turns chronic it is time to consider permanent solutions so you can return to a healthier and happier lifestyle.
