Spondylosis is basically a term for age-related wear and tear on your joints. It can effect the neck, middle back, or lower back regions by putting pressure on the nerve root which can cause:
- stiffness
- shoulder, arm, or chest pain
- tingling in one’s extremities
- numbness and weakness
- lack of coordination
- difficulty walking
- abnormal reflexes
- loss of bladder, bowel, or urinary retention
By the age of 30, many people show signs of vertebral and disc degeneration on X-ray, although symptoms may not appear until many years later. The drying and loss of elasticity in the spinal and cervical discs is a direct effect due to age. Bulging and some herniation of the discs is also a change that can cause spondylosis. Those with previous neck injuries are more likely to develop cervical spondylosis.
If you or a loved on is experiencing neck pain that is not responding to over-the-counter pain medications, we strongly suggest that you seek medical advice. Also, if the pain has significantly worsened or you develop numbness in your arms or legs it is a common warning sign that your body is experiencing symptoms due to some spine related complication.
